Rawhide is made from discarded cowhide that is treated with a noxious brew of toxic chemicals like bleach, hydrogen peroxide, and formaldehyde. It is soaked in glue, so it holds its shape, then shellacked to make it shiny. Rawhide is also often braised with artificial flavorings and scents to make it attractive to dogs.

Rawhide is bad for dogs. In fact, rawhide is dangerous for dogs. When your dog chews or swallows rawhide, it becomes wet, causing it to swell up to four times its original size. Rawhide cannot be fully digested, so when a dog does manage to swallow it, it can cause painful intestinal blockages, sometimes requiring expensive surgery.
